Therapy is a big step for many people - and sometimes it can be just as overwhelming to begin the process as it is to discuss with family or friends. If someone you know discloses their therapy undertaking, here are some tips to help:
Listen actively: Let them know you're there to listen without judgment.
Offer reassurance: Therapy is a sign of strength and seeking help.
Normalize therapy: Talk openly about the benefits of mental health care.
Help with logistics: Offer to find resources or schedule appointments (where appropriate).
Inversely, here are some things to avoid:
Pressuring Them: The decision to seek therapy is personal.
Offering Unsolicited Advice: Listen and be supportive, but avoid giving advice.
Minimizing their Struggles: Validate their feelings and concerns.

Confidentiality is one of the most important elements between a client and psychotherapist. Successful therapy requires a high degree of trust knowing that what is discussed in session is not disclosed, with the limits of confidentiality being the exception. You may want your counselor to share information or give an update to someone and in those cases you counselor cannot release this information without obtaining your written permission by law.
See our full policy on Confidentility for more information.
-
Sunglow Counseling use a HIPPA-compliant electronic filing system to store all counseling records, ensuring client documents are safely stored and protected.
Because clients must be entered into the system for a counselor to enter documentation and notes, clients are reminded that failure to fill out their intake paperwork will result in a reduced intake session time in order to enter the needed intake information to this system.
If you need assistance filling out your paperwork, Sunnglow Counseling is happy to help.

Therapy assists a client in finding the root cause or pursue long term solutions to mental and emotional blocks that have elicited pain. Medication addresses the symptoms that are caused by the emotional distress or duress we are experiencing. Working with your medical doctor or Psychiatrist, you can determine what the best path is for you, considering that in some cases an integrated approach combining medication and therapy can be successful.

Please call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room. Notify your counselor; but most importantly, please seek help! We are not a crisis facility; while we can help you during your sessions, we are typically unable to get someone in the same day.
